Ray Sefo: “..but fighters will never fight at their walking around weight…”

I recently got the chance to talk to World Series Of Fighting Owner Ray Sefo. To hardcore fight fans the New Zealander is a well respected fight legend – putting work in the boxing, kickboxing, and Mixed Martial Arts scene. Throughout his career he has racked up many wins, especially in kickboxing, going 56-21-1.

The hard work throughout his life has created a unique experience in his present venture – being able to relate to the fighters he signs. Sefo understands a fighter’s mentality because he will always be one. This shines through most when he addresses fighter issues prominent in the sport today. Creating a clear picture to those following the sport from a more well rounded perspective, from someone who is not only a fan but also a fighter-promoter-and business man.

I got the opportunity to ask him about the man behind the gloves/suit.

What are your thoughts on the ONE Championship Organization moving away from weight cutting – to fighters fighting at walking weight?

OneFC is entitled to make decisions that benefit their company but fighters will never fight at their walking around weight, what I mean by that is fighters have 4 to 6 months of after a fight so fighters will put on 15 to 20 pounds easy. Take me for example I walk around at 265lbs but I’ll be at 250 by the time I finish my training camp so I’ll fight at 250 which is not the weight that I walk around at.

What is one thing fans might not know about you or WSOF?

Fan’s might not know that I’m a twin and that I’m also an owner/ co-founder of WSOF.

What are your goals for this upcoming year?

My goals for 2016 is to help my team grow WSOF and continue to learn how to be a better version of myself in every way possible.
